A terrifying moment in the skies above Mexico: At least 12 people were injured Friday morning after a hot air balloon made a forced landing near the famous Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan — a top tourist destination just outside Mexico City.
📍 Officials say the balloon ran into an air pocket before crashing near San Martín de las Pirámides, just 1,000 feet from the ancient ruins. The balloon came down near power lines along Tuxpan Avenue, according to images verified by CNN.
All 12 passengers were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment, but no fatalities have been reported so far. 🙏
🛑 Authorities say the balloon was operated by a local tour company that offers flights over the pyramids. The company has not commented.
A 29-year-old man has been detained as part of an ongoing investigation by the Attorney General’s Office in the State of Mexico.
The Teotihuacan pyramids — including the iconic Pyramids of the Sun and Moon — draw thousands of tourists each year and are among the most visited archaeological sites in Latin America.
Investigators are now working to determine what went wrong in what should’ve been a scenic ride through the skies.
